Ancestry: Father’s family, mostly Scotch, some Welsh, Dutch, mostly northern VA before Revolution. Mother’s family mostly early English Colonials. Both were school teachers in Missouri.  Father built a sawmill in Chewelah. Matilda was fourth of eight children. 

Education: Graduated Chewelah, WA, H.S. 1913. Studied Home Economics at Washington State College. Married when she was a junior.

Comments:
Became ill in Schenectady, NY, came west to Portland, OR and died there on July 29, 1926 during surgery for tubercular meningitis, probably contracted from the cows on the farm, as this was before pasteurization became widespread.
